According to Marlene: “My original intention with this quilt was to give it to my parents as a Christmas gift in honor of their 62nd wedding anniversary that year (1989). It changed with the death of my Father that year.”

Original writing on the sleeve of the quilt:

“To: My Mother, Ruth Ludders Brown.

This wall hanging was a quilt challenge given to each member of the Dunes Country Quilters, Michigan City, Indiana in June 1989. We were given the four printed fabrics used in the quilt and were told we could add three more fabrics. I chose to add the red, green, and beige. I began this wall hanging the last week of August. With school starting, I didn’t get much accomplished until my emergency trip to Florida the last week of September. As you know, I worked on it nearly non stop during the eight days I spent with you at Dad’s bed side. When I got home, I put the quilt in the frame Nathan had made for me and did my quilting in Debra’s bedroom. I began the quilting on Tuesday, October 10th, just before Joe and Betty called to say Dad had died. I completed the quilting the first week of November.

I give it to you this Christmas 1989. To our shared piece of work with love, admiration, and thanks for all the many wonderful things you have done for me.
