Marlene writes, “This quilt was made to hang over the stairwell of the 125 North house (Marlene and Ted’s home). It was laid out to give the shadow effect in the border, which is different than they would have used. I further put tulips made of “polished apple fabric” over the quilt and shadowed them in the lower border.

The inscription is written on tulip leaves on the back lef side. It reads: Shades and Shadows of Aunt Mary’s Garden. Mary Keller was a wonderful Dunkard woman who was the housekeeper of Charles Brown, my great uncle, for over fifty years. They lived on a farm outside of Frankfort, Indiana with both flower and vegetable gardens.”
