Letter from Marlene at the time of the gift:
“Dear Haskell,
The snow is falling lightly here and I suppose it is a picture postcard at your lovely new home on Winterberry Lane. Such a picturesque name!
I know change is very difficult for you and you must be going through some angst over the move. I can only tell you that it will soon be a thing of the past and you will love the new location with all of its amenities. You have been isolated in the country for such a long time that you have probably forgotten the hustle and bustle of a community such as where you now live. It will give you an opportunity to make some new friends and I know Jeanette will take to it like a duck to water!
I am sending you the quilt, Fulton County Round Barn, to hang in your new bedroom to remind you of the peaceful rural countryside that you love so much. I hope you enjoy having it and think of me when you see it.
Today, I counted up how many places that I have lived in my lifetime and came up with ten. That may sound like a lot, but one time when I was visiting Mother at the Fowler House, she said that she had counted up how many places she had lived in her lifetime. I don’t remember the exact count, but it was well over forty places! Can you imagine that?
