Designed and quilted by Marlene Woodfield, 2005. Donated by Ted and Marlene Woodfield to the First United Methodist Church, Michigan City, Indiana in honor of Larry and Joyce Dalton who had a vision to start a free clinic in Michigan City, and supplied the driving force to make this dream a reality.

Legend of the Dogwood Tree

When Christ was on earth, the dogwood grew to a towering size with lovely hue. Its branches were strong and interwoven and for Christ’s cross its timbers were chosen. Being distressed at the use of this wood, Christ mad a promise which still holds good:

“Not ever again shall the dogwood grow to be large enough for such a tree, and so slender and twisted it shall always be with cross-shaped blossoms for all to see. The petals shall have bloodstains marked in brown and in the blossom’s center a thorny crown.

All who see it will think of Me, nailed to a cross from the dogwood tree. Protected and cherished this tree shall be a reflection of all of my agony.”

The wall hanging and lecturn covers donated by Marlene were part of a group. The first panel was in memory of Warren Troyer. The second panel was Marlene’s quilt in honor of Larry and Joyce Dalton. The third panel was given by Kent and Meredith (Meri) Gulstrom in honor of Ray and Katie Warren. The fourth panel was given by Gene and Kathryn (Katie) Gielow in honor of United Methodist Women.
